Grief

Grief and bereavement may be one of the most difficult
processes children and adults experience. As part of the
bereavement process, many people show symptoms associated
with Major Depressive Episode, including sadness, fearfulness,
insomnia, fatigue, and “emotional numbness”. Children and
adolescents may act out their grief by exhibiting increased tantrums,
regressive, or risk-taking behaviors, or alcohol and drug use. They are
vulnerable to experiencing a delayed reaction to the loss of a loved one. Anniversary of losses, subsequent losses, holidays, birthdays, or milestones, such as graduations and weddings, may lead to intensification of symptoms.

Family and friends tend to be supportive and comforting when a loss involves the death of a spouse, child, parent, or family member. Other losses, such as miscarriage, stillbirth, or death of pets, may not be recognized or understood by family and friends. Losses that have occurred from AIDS, drug overdose, suicide, or murder may receive less support because many people are uncomfortable dealing with these issues.

When bereavement is prolonged or complicated by problems in everyday functioning, a referral to a mental health professional may be appropriate.
